Editorial Process

JESSE adheres to international standards of scientific quality and editorial ethics, as established by organizations such as COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), DOAJ, Scopus, and Web of Science. Within this framework, every manuscript submitted to the journal undergoes a rigorous, transparent, and structured editorial process consisting of the following stages:

1. Manuscript Submission (via OJS)

The corresponding author must register and log in to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform to submit the manuscript as a potential contribution. All required metadata, manuscript files, and supplementary materials must be provided. The system automatically forwards the submission to the Editor-in-Chief for initial assessment.

2. Initial Editorial Screening (Editor-in-Chief)

Each submitted manuscript is subject to a preliminary assessment by the Editor-in-Chief to ensure its alignment with the scope and focus of the journal and to verify compliance with the minimum formal requirements for evaluation (including structure, language, references, originality, etc.). This assessment includes the use of plagiarism detection tools to confirm the authenticity of the content.

The aim of this stage is to streamline the peer review process by ensuring that only manuscripts with significant scientific potential proceed to external review.

At this stage:

  • The manuscript may be rejected without external review if it lacks originality, scientific relevance, quality, or fails to meet basic editorial standards.
  • If suitable, the manuscript is forwarded to the peer review stage.

3. Double-Blind Peer Review

The manuscript is assigned to two or more independent reviewers with expertise in the subject area. The identities of both authors and reviewers remain confidential throughout the process, in accordance with the double-blind review model, to ensure fairness and objectivity.

Reviewers are selected based on their technical expertise, academic experience, and absence of conflicts of interest. Reviewers assess:

  • Scientific quality and originality
  • Methodological rigor and reproducibility
  • Clarity, coherence, and relevance of the presentation
  • Contribution to the field of smart and sustainable engineering

JESSE encourages reviewers to provide detailed and constructive feedback to help improve the quality of the manuscript, regardless of their final recommendation. Reviewers provide one of the following recommendations: accept, minor revision, major revision, or reject.

4. Author Revisions (based on reviewer's feedback)

If revisions are requested, authors are invited to submit a revised version of the manuscript, accompanied by a detailed response addressing each reviewer’s comment. The Editor-in-Chief — and, when necessary, the reviewers — will assess the revised version to ensure that the concerns have been adequately addressed.

5, Editorial Decision

The final decision regarding acceptance, rejection, or request for revisions rests with the Editor-in-Chief, who considers the reviewers’ reports along with the manuscript’s alignment with the journal’s editorial aims and its scientific merit.

The Editor-in-Chief may:

  • Accept the manuscript for publication
  • Request major or minor revisions
  • Reject the manuscript with editorial justification

This stage ensures that editorial decisions are ethical, responsible, and consistent with the principles of transparency, openness, and reproducibility, in accordance with international best practices.

6. Language and Style Editing

Once accepted, the manuscript undergoes language and style editing to ensure consistency with the journal’s editorial guidelines, citation format, and readability standards. Authors may be contacted for clarification and will be asked to approve any suggested changes.

7. Publication

The final version of the manuscript is published in the journal’s annual issue (December) via the OJS platform. Each article is assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and made openly accessible in accordance with JESSE’s open access policy.

8. Indexing and Digital Preservation

All published articles are indexed in relevant scientific databases and search engines to enhance discoverability. In addition, all content is stored on the servers of the Universidad Técnica de Ambato, and monthly backups are performed to ensure long-term digital preservation.
