MEANING GIVEN BY THE FAMILY TO THE VALUES INVOLVED IN THE CARE OF OLDER ADULTS WITH ALZHEIMER'S.

Introduction: Alzheimer's is one of the most common pathologies of cognitive decline in older adults, who require care at home by family members with values. Objective: To understand the meaning that family members give to the values that intervene in the care of the older adult with Alzheimer's, from an integrative perspective. Methods: Qualitative, phenomenological-hermeneutic study, the method selected for the interpretation of the information was Herbert Spielberg's. After informed consent, an in-depth interview was used; the key informants were 3 family caregivers. Also, 2 external informants, two nursing professionals who work in the Autonomous Service of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the state of Aragua, Venezuela. Results: There were two emerging categories: 1) Understanding the psycho-affective state of caregivers of older adults with Alzheimer's; 2) Identifying the values involved in caring for older adults with Alzheimer's. The study reveals that, to understand the values involved in caring for older adults with Alzheimer's, family members must consider several elements such as feelings, knowledge, love, dedication, and human warmth. They also require training to maintain their psychological state and provide them with security during care. Caregivers live different experiences. Conclusions: From the perspective of the family caregiver, values such as love, dedication, responsibility, perseverance, and honesty, as well as feelings and knowledge, are embedded in caregiving, in order to preserve the biopsychosocial well-being of older adults with Alzheimer's.
