Abstract

Poisonings occur due to contact with a toxic substance or a non-toxic substance in large quantities, either accidentally or intentionally, causing organ damage and potentially leading to death. Objective: To analyze the frequency, risk factors, complications, therapeutic approach, and nursing interventions in poisoned patients.Methodology: This study corresponds to a bibliographic review in scientific databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Springer Nature, ResearchGate, Dialnet, and Scielo, as well as institutional health-related websites. A total of 56 scientific documents were used to develop this research. Results: One of the most frequently involved substances in poisonings worldwide is pesticides. Regarding risk factors, they vary depending on whether the population is pediatric, adult, or elderly, with young children being at the highest risk. Poisoning complications differ depending on the substance, including organ, nervous, and cognitive impairments, and can even be fatal. Finally, the therapeutic approach, as well as nursing interventions, is determined based on the type of poison or toxic substance. However, all aim to stabilize the patient and eliminate the toxic agent from the body, along with monitoring vital signs, blood values, neurological examinations, and other aspects. Conclusion: It is essential for nursing staff to have adequate knowledge of various toxic substances, their effects, and the appropriate therapeutic approach for each causal agent.
