Abstract

A narrative review was carried out on the relationship of the intestinal microbiota with cardiovascular diseases. Databases from different articles were used where original studies published between 2019 and 2023 were identified. 20 original studies were reviewed that report that the intestinal microbiota, a diverse set of microorganisms in our gastrointestinal tract, has emerged as a crucial factor in cardiovascular health. Its multifaceted influence is related to metabolic diseases, insulin resistance, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. This complex network of microbial interactions affects immunity, inflammation, and cardiac function. Intestinal dysbiosis, an imbalance in this microbial community, is associated with cardiovascular diseases by influencing risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. The review of the literature has made it possible to identify individual variability in the microbiota and the influence of external factors pose challenges in the interpretation of these findings. More research is needed to better understand these complex interactions and optimize specific therapeutic interventions, with attention to safety and effectiveness, as well as personalization of treatments to address individual variations.
