El queratocono, su diagnóstico y manejo. Una revisión bibliográfica

El queratocono es una enfermedad corneal no inflamatoria que afecta la agudeza visual progresivamente de las personas portadoras. Las causas no se han precisado, sin embargo, se piensa que su etiología es multifactorial. Afecta por igual a hombres y mujeres de cualquier raza o etnia, y aunque las edades más comunes de diagnóstico oscilan entre los 20 y 40 años se desarrolla en la niñez y demora cerca de 10 años en manifestarse clínicamente. El presente artículo pretende realizar una revisión bibliográfica de los elementos más relevantes de esta afección. El estudio de esta problemática de salud es relevante considerando que las personas portadoras de la enfermedad con frecuencia sufren el deterioro progresivo de la visión, que compromete la realización de actividades diarias, suele afectar la esfera emocional y el desenvolvimiento en el ámbito laboral y social, asimismo genera preocupaciones en el entorno familiar y, por tanto, afecta la calidad de vida de estos pacientes.
