Abstract

According to World Health Organization statistics, the global prevalence of diabetes in adults (over the age of 18) has doubled, with a 5% increase in premature diabetes mortality. The prevalence of diabetes has increased faster in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, myocardial infarction, stroke and lower limb amputation. Annually, 1.6 million deaths have been estimated as a direct cause. Nearly half of all deaths attributable to hyperglycemia occur before age 70. We can then say that diabetes mellitus continues to have an increasing prevalence, unfailingly associated with progressive and irreversible complications.
