Characteristics of personality disorders and alcohol consumption

Abstract

Problematic alcohol use in young Tungurahuenses who are in college leads to significant mental health problems. This pathology has been associated with different mental disorders including personality disorders. The objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between the characteristics of personality disorders and alcohol intake in young people from 17 to 30 years old, who study at Institutes of Higher Education and Universities of Ambato, central region of Ecuador. The methodology used in this study is of a cross-sectional correlational type and consisted of the application of questionnaires that measure alcohol consumption and characteristics of personality disorders in a population of 521 young adults pursuing higher education. The results indicate that the characteristics of personality disorders with the highest incidence correspond to schizoid and histrionic and in smaller quantity the characteristics for antisocial and schizotypal. Women have a predominance of impulsive, dependent and anxious characteristics. Those evaluated with antisocial and narcissistic characteristics are the most related to the different negative consequences of drinking alcohol. The data from this research can be used to find effective prevention strategies and intervention when dual pathologies such as alcohol consumption and personality disorders occur.
