Complications of bariatric surgery

Abstract
Introduction: Acute complications of bariatric surgery require timely treatment, giving priority to the control of bleeding, infection, surgical resolution, chronic or late complications may occur after medical discharge due to internal hernias, abdominal wall hernias or intestinal malabsorption. Objectives: To know the immediate, mediate, and late complications of bariatric surgery. Methodology: A search was carried out in databases such as PubMed, Mendeley, Google Scholar, Web Of Science with 45 articles published in the last 5 years. Results: complications can be immediate occur during surgery and are characterized by acute hemorrhage, dehiscences, intestinal perforation, they can also occur in the immediate postoperative period, late complications are those that occur after hospital discharge such as hernias. Conclusions: Bariatric surgery is currently one of the most performed surgical procedures, with high success rates, however it is necessary to know the complications that may arise during or after the performance of this surgical procedure, in order to be informed and prepared to resolve hemorrhage, anastomosis leaks, infections, hernias, as well as being aware of other important situations such as nutrition and admission to the intensive care unit, achieving optimal control in the postoperative period that allows detecting any alteration that affects the patient's homeostasis.
