Introduction: Nowadays, sustainable development is an initiative that has been implemented in most social aspects. Embryology is fundamental within health sciences, but its traditional teaching may not be sustainable. This study addresses the integration of sustainable development in embryology higher education, as well as analyzing the long-term implications and benefits in medical training. Objective: Strategies were analyzed and proposed to incorporate sustainable development in higher education in embryology, focusing on curricular review, laboratory practices, use of new technologies and teacher training. Materials and methods: A systematic review was carried out with scientific literature from the last five years, considering articles published in scientific databases such as Medline, Pubmed, Elsiever, Scielo, Scopus, New England Journal of Medicine, official pages of International and National Organizations. Results: The need was identified to integrate sustainability issues into the curriculum, implement sustainable laboratory practices, train teachers, encourage sustainability-oriented research and promote the use of new technologies. Conclusion: Incorporating sustainable development into embryology education represents an essential challenge that can significantly improve educational quality. The implementation of various methods and the use of new technologies offer promising avenues to optimize student learning, promoting a more efficient and responsible use of laboratory resources, in line with sustainable development
