Analysis of anaerobic systems for landfill leachate treatment and renewable energy generation: UASB reactors, anammox systems and biocells
Main Article Content
Abstract
Landfills are used as final disposal of waste from the population in the world, however, the problem that arises is the generation of leachates due to the transfer of water through the solid waste containing high organic load, concentration of ammonium and heavy metals creating environmental concern. This article analyzes through a literature review the anaerobic biological treatments for the purification of leachates from landfills. These processes largely remove water pollutants, are simple and generate low operation costs. These systems also stand out for their good performance to produce biogas which can be reused as a source of energy generating economic savings. The study is aimed at the following systems: UASB reactors, anammox systems and biocells.
