Is it necessary to request a coprological examination for all patients with acute gastroenteritis? Retrospective study at the Puyo General Hospital period January-December 2022

Abstract

Gastroenteritis is caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, this pathology is among the frequent reasons for emergency consultation. A quantitative, descriptive, observational, non-experimental study was carried out in the Emergency Service of the Puyo General Hospital during the period 2022, with the objective of establishing the number of requests for coprological examination, antibiotic therapy and prevalence of acute gastroenteritis. This was done through the collection of information from medical records, the Varanus system and laboratory results with a total of 1974 patients. It was identified that the highest prevalence of gastroenteritis occurred in the population between 19-60 years old with 41%, in addition to 56.2% of the population with gastrointestinal infection a coprological examination was requested and the most used antibiotic is ciprofloxacin
