EFECTOS TERAPÉUTICOS DEL MALEATO DE TIMOLOL TÓPICO EN LOS HEMANGIOMAS INFANTILES

Introducción: Los hemangiomas infantiles son los tumores vasculares benignos frecuentes en lactantes, que con el tiempo pueden involucionar pero en ocasiones se producen secuelas, como telangiectasias, que pueden causar desfiguración e influir en el desarrollo psicosocial. El tratamiento debe ser individualizado y suele incluir propranolol, corticosteroides o láser. Sin embargo, recientemente se ha propuesto el uso del maleato de timolol tópico en estos pacientes. Objetivo: Conocer los efectos terapéuticos del maleato de timolol tópico en los hemangiomas infantiles. Métodos: Estudio documental, con selección de ensayos clínicos aleatorizados controlados, llevados a cabo en los últimos diez años; las bases de datos científicas utilizadas fueron PubMed a través de la plataforma National Library of Medicine, Lilacs e IBECS a través de la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud; CENTRAL, a través de Cochrane; Academic Search, PsycINFO, Cinahl y SPORTDiscus, a través de EBSCO Host; WOS y SciELO a través de la Web of Science. Resultados: El maleato de timolol tópico es eficaz en el tratamiento de hemangioma infantil, la muestra total fue de 294 pacientes de seis estudios. El timolol tópico se aplicó en una concentración del 0,5%, la frecuencia de aplicación osciló entre 2 a 4 veces al día y la duración total del tratamiento fue de 3 a 12 meses. Conclusiones: El maleato de timolol tópico disminuye el volumen de los hemangiomas infantiles, así como la coloración, las complicaciones y la necesidad de intervención adicional; se trata de un tratamiento bien tolerado, cuya respuesta depende de la edad en el momento del tratamiento inicial.
