Abstract

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory, multisystem and autoinmune disease that produces antinuclear antibodies, which is able of affecting any organ, its prevalence is higher in women especially in fertile age than in men with a 9: 1 ratio. Its clinical presentation is insidious and variable from typical skin lesions such as malar erythema to cardiac, pulmonary or renal systemic alterations. Its diagnosis is focused on the clinic plus the determination of antinuclear antibodies and several antibodies and laboratory tests as well as imaging tests to determine the presence of other complications.

Objective: To apply the theoretical knowledge of systemic Lupus erythematosus to analyze the clinical case of the debut of a 60-year-old male patient.

Material and methods: Retrospective descriptive study, clinical case presentation.

Results: The following is a clinical case of a 60-year-old male patient who presented with an acute coronary syndrome, accompanied by skin lesions and weight loss. After several diagnostic suspicions, the diagnosis of SLE was confirmed.

Conclusions: Despite the more common prevalence of SLE in young women; this pathology can occur in males over 50 years of age and their diagnostic suspicion should be present in patients with insidious clinical characteristics of SLE as their early diagnosis can avoid systemic complications that this pathology can develop if proper treatment is not given
