Abstract

Introduction: Dry Eye syndrome is understood as a disorder of the ocular surface, whose essential symptoms are eye discomfort, altered vision, tear film instability, inflammation of the ocular surface and destruction of it in more cases Severe It affects the quality of life of patients and is one of the prevalent diseases in the world today.


Objective: Conduct a systematic and critical review of the literature on Dry eye syndrome.


Material andmethods: A systematic and critical review of the literature was carried out during the period 2014-2018, using search engines of indexed articles in Scopus, Latindex, Scielo, PUBMED, MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE, on the topic Dry eye syndrome.


Results: The systematic review of the literature in the period 2014-2018 allowed to analyse 22 articles published in indexed journals on the topic Dry Eye syndrome, demonstrating its conceptualization, prevalence, risk factors, pathogenesis, Clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment.


Conclusions: Dry Eye syndrome is a multifactorial, complex and chronic disease that affects the ocular surface due to the deficiency in the production of tears, poor quality of these or excessive evaporation and that significantly affects the quality of life of the Patients.
