Penetrating abdominal trauma in a patient with situs inversus totalis

Abstract

Introduction: Situs inversus totalis is a rare congenital condition presenting an inverted position of the organs of the thorax and abdomen with respect to the sagittal plane; Its association with abdominal trauma is unusual and represents a surgical challenge. Objective: to describe a clinical case of abdominal trauma plus situs inversus. Materials and method: We present the case of an 18-year-old patient with penetrating abdominal trauma plus peritonism, identifying in the tomography the presentation of situs inversus totalis, deciding to undergo surgical repair, which was without complications. Conclusions: Situs inversus totalis creates challenges in surgical procedures, due to the adaptation to different locations of the anatomical structures, with the imaging study being crucial for diagnosis and surgical planning
