 ABSTRACT

At present, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) make it possible to create new learning environments which present great opportunities to teachers and particularly to students in terms of accessibility, time flexibility, space, rhythm, schedules, etc. providing teachers the opportunity to transform the educational process and improve the quality of the education. In this context, the virtual education appears as a flexible modality of training that allows students not only to access to information but also transmit and produce knowledge based on data obtained through communication networks regardless of the place or time people involved find themselves. In this article we present the results obtained in an experience of distant education supported by the use of technology specifically under the blended-learning (b-learning) model, carried out with students of English of the levels: A1 (Beginner), A2 (Elementary) and B1 (Preintermediate) in the Langua- ge Center of Technical University of Ambato. The implemented b-learning model is a mixed learning methodology that combines: a) the on-li- ne activities and monitoring through the Moodle virtual platform with b) the face-to-face class once a week. This Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) was implemented as a strategy to change the traditional manner of generating knowledge in the classrooms to a more dynamic one and satisfy the need of communication and interaction between teacher-student and student-student, as well as promote students’ autonomous learning, improve the processes and consequently the learning outcomes. In pursuing this objective, firstly the Virtual Learning Environment was elaborated using the Moodle Platform, for which the contents and activities to be implemented in the virtual classrooms were selected and created for the three levels of English. Furthermore, this research had as its main goal to find out: a) the impact of the implementation of the b-learning methodology in the students’ academic performance and b) the level of satisfaction of teachers and students with such methodology. To assess the improvement and development of the English language skills, the grades of the Final Exam were used, for this purpose two groups were created: the Experimental and Control groups. After the implementation of the b-learning model with the Experimental group, both groups were compared to analyze if the proposed methodology had an effect on the academic performance. On the other hand, to find out the level of teachers and students’ satisfaction, a survey at the end of the implementation of the b-learning model was applied to the Experimental group. The results achieved, as well as the favorable level of teachers and students’ satisfaction show us the significance and value of this experience particularly regarding the participation, interaction and communication established among the participants.
