Mucinous cystoadenoma of ovarium, a case report and literature review

Abstract

Introduction: Ovarian mucinous cystadenoma is the most frequent type of tumor; originated from the superficial coelomic epithelium, 85% of these tumors are benign, 6% have low malignant potential, and 9% are invasive. Macroscopically they could reach gigantic dimensions, with an average diameter of 15–30cm. The clinical picture is nonspecific due to the few symptoms generated, the most frequent are abdominal distention, hypogastrium oppressive pain, and urinary and gastrointestinal symptoms. Laparoscopic surgery or exploratory laparotomy facilitated the diagnosis and the treatment, enabling the removal of the entire tumor without complications.

Objective: Describe a clinical case of a young patient with an ovarian tumor (mucinous cystadenoma).

Material and methods: Retrospective descriptive study, presentation of a clinical case.

Results: Clinical cases of an 18 years old female patient, presenting an abdominal mass of 7 months of evolution. With a progressive increase in size, accompanied by occasional diffuse abdominal pain of moderate-intensity, VAS 7/10, without probable cause. Requiring medical evaluation, with complementary tests and immediate surgical procedure. An emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed, with exeresis of the mass and right adnexectomy. Finding a giant tumor mass that occupies almost the entire abdominal cavity, with an approximate diameter of 40cm x30cm and weight of 8455 grams, compromising the right uterine tube.

Conclusions: Mucinous cystadenoma is an ovarian tumor mostly benign, which requires a correct and early diagnosis to provide a proper treatment through surgical resolution.  Avoiding multiple complications and a significant decrease in patients morbidity and mortality.
