Abstract

Introduction: Secondary to what happened worldwide, in the context of a pandemic by the so-called COVID 19, our activities of daily life were also affected and modified, so remote emergency teaching  (RET) gained strength in all educational levels, in order to preserve educational continuity; Within this environment, social networks are shown as the first source of information, misinformation and even an educational platform for the universe of students with Internet access. But are social networks really useful in medical education? Can these be part of formal education? These are questions that we will review in this study.


Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of social networks in virtual teaching in relation to the COVID 19 pandemic, through the updated search in scientific databases.


Methodology: A bibliographic review of the descriptive literature was initiated on the impact of social networks on virtual teaching in times of COVID-19, following the flowchart protocol of the PRISMA Report by searching the databases. electronic: Google scholars, Elsevier, Scielo, Pubmed. All studies used in this review were published in Spanish and English. The keywords used were: “social networks”, “COVID-19” “education”, using Boolean operators “and”; "or me".


Conclusions: The urgent need for virtuality reaffirmed the opportunity of universal access to education through virtuality, students and teachers generated educational content at the level of social networks. In medical education, theoretical elements can be taken from social networks, but attendance is required by the teacher-student-patient triad to improve the teaching-learning process.
