Comfort perceived by the patient: phenomenological study

Abstract

Introduction: Comfort is a multidimensional and fundamental element in patient care, because nursing professionals seek to evaluate and know the physical and psychosocial needs of emergency service users. For this reason, the study seeks to identify the perception of comfort of patients who receive applied nursing interventions, providing an improvement in their health status, offering timely, efficient and quality care.


Objectives: Know and analyze the perception of patients, identifying the context and type of comfort provided by nursing professionals in the emergency area.


Materials and methods: An intentional non-probabilistic sampling method was chosen given that the research has a qualitative phenomenological approach. It has the approval of the Ethics and Research Committee on Human Beings of the PUCE, in addition, the authorization of the Directorate of Hospital Health Services of the HE-1 official letter No. CCFFA-HE1-CDI-2024-0083-O and Research and Ethics Commission of the Specialty Hospital of the Armed Forces No. 1 document N*2024-003-HE-1-10 CPIC. A semi-structured interview was applied to 15 adults who received care in the Emergency Service, with an average age between 20 and 50 years. The patients were informed about the subject of the study and after signing the informed consent. To collect the data, a device (recorder) is used, applying coding for the transcription of data, the analysis technique used is Philipp Mayring and the use of ATLAS ti software for the processing of qualitative information generating organization, analysis and interpretation of the information from this research.


Results: The information obtained through the Atlas analysis software. Ti allowed the creation of a hermeneutical unit, obtaining 57 codes, 195 citations, 1 analysis network. It will be observed that the physical context has 18 subcategories, the environmental context 11 subcategories, the social context 15 subcategories and the psychospiritual context 12 subcategories. The type of comfort relief with the greatest predominance was identified, followed by tranquility when satisfying needs.


Conclusion: the research reflects that nursing staff generate greater comfort in the physical context and environment, consequently the predominant type of comfort is relief and tranquility, generating a state of well-being in care.
