Abstract

Introduction: The complete hydatidiform mole that is part of the gestational trophoblastic disease is characterized by the presence of hydropic chorionic villi with the absence of an embryo or fetus, and is due to a genetic alteration during conception. It generally occurs in extreme ages, closely associated with age over 45 years.

Objective: To describe a clinical case of hydatidiform mole in a woman over 50 years of age.

Material and methods: Retrospective descriptive study, presentation of a clinical case. The patient was surgically treated with abdominal hysterectomy.

Results: The case of a molar pregnancy in a 52-year-old patient is presented, the same that is resolved by abdominal hysterectomy, with a histopathological report of complete hydatidiform mole.

Conclusions: molar pregnancy is a frequent pathology in extreme ages, considered as a genetic alteration during fertilization. The resolution of the molar pregnancy can be by uterine evacuation, however considering maternal age, parity and other risk factors that increase the possibility of malignancy, a hysterectomy can be performed to treat this pathology. Subsequent follow-up is performed by serial quantification of beta subunits of human chorionic gonadotrophin , which is considered essential in the management of trophoblastic disease.
