Assessment of joint amplitude, stability and shoulder strength in athletes to detect GIRD

Abstract

Introduction: The present investigation is carried out to know how many athletes present internal rotation deficit of shoulder GIRD due to the little evidence found in the country. GIRD occurs when there is a decrease of >20° in the joint amplitude of internal rotation, due to an adaptive process of the shoulder to compensate for repetitive stresses exerted during a throwing movement.


Objective: To evaluate athletes with shoulder internal rotation deficit GIRD.


Method: A transversal research was carried out with a population of 50 athletes of the Tungurahua Sports Federation between 9 and 17 years of age. For data collection, a clinical history was implemented, the articular range was evaluated by means of the goniometric test and by means of the CKCUEST and SMBT tests, shoulder stability and power were evaluated.


Results: Data were collected from the initial evaluations applied to the athletes, which had significant differences with a value p=0.00 being the rule that indicates p=0.005, rejecting the null hypothesis which indicates the usefulness of these tests for the evaluation of the upper limb.


Conclusion: It was found that 68% of athletes have a deficiency of internal rotation of the right arm and 60% of the left arm
