Abstract

Many species of insects have used as traditional food by local peoples, mainly in the tropic region. In this study, the edible lepidopterans in Mexico were used as study case that exemplify progress and challenges to incorporate edible insects to large scale human nutrition. Although edible insects have gained increasing interest as alternative food source for the future, caution must be paid to some aspects related to management and conservation of it. The lack of a specific Regulation for edible insects emerges as a key element necessary for ensuring safe consumption and conservation of wildlife populations of insects.
